Nervous about starting school?

Do you hear, "I don't want to go to kindergarten" or have, a child who is reluctant to start school because of general anxiety or  fear of missing you? As a mom, school counselor, and former teacher, here are some tips...
  • Acknowledge his/her feelings. Feelings are just feelings. They are not good or bad and we each have the right to our feelings without judgement or blame.
  • Talk about the fun things that will be going on at school.
  • Recruit the assistance of older siblings, neighbors, etc. who have had a positive school experience. Kids often listen more to peers than adults.
  • Read a book with your child about a character who enjoys school.
  • Spend some special time with your child picking out clothes for school. They do not have to be new when money is tight. Consider checking out garage sales, e-bay, and thrift stores, along with regular Back to School Sales. Swapping "like-new" clothes with a co-worker whose children do not go to your child's school is a creative Win-Win solution for you, your friend, and your children.
  • Help your child think about good memories in as many details as possible. Thinking "happy thoughts" literally changes our brain chemistry and helps us feel better. Remember Michael, Jane, and Burt floating to the ceiling when they laughed or everyone singing "My Favorite Things" in The Sound of Music. They were movies, but the technique is one of the most valuable things we can do to think and feel better. Give it a shot!

I have decided to make this an entirely FREE site and am not offering Life Coaching at this time.
I am choosing not to sell any products or services. Please, feel free to check out the many resources I have made available to you on both this site and my YouTube Channel.

I developed a 2 DVD set called: Tap Into Learning with Mrs. King for the 2010 CASC Conference. The set was specifically designed for School Counselors and other Educators but the techniques can easily be used at home.
Rather than sell the sets, I am posting the info online.
All of videos from the 1st DVD are now available for FREE on YouTube in a Playlist I created!
I have posted some of the videos from the 2nd DVD to YouTube and will be posting more of them for home or school use.
